MARLON BRANDO, SINGING. That might be reason enough to give this well-acted, brilliantly choreographed musical a look, but from the very first color-saturated scene set in pre-Disneyfied Times Square, the witty dialogue, catchy tunes, and engaging storyline are mighty hooks. Gambler Nathan Detroit (Frank Sinatra) is short $1,000 dollars to host a craps game. He bets Sky Masterson (Marlon Brando) that he can’t take cold fish Sergeant Sarah Brown (Jean Simmons) for dinner in Havana. Through uproarious scenes (bar fight!) and sexy show tunes (kitty meow song!), the comedy ends with a double wedding between Nathan and his longtime mistress (played wonderfully by Vivian Blaine) as well as the unlikely sinner Sky Masterson and salvation-seeking Sergeant Brown.

Based on a hit Broadway play, Guys and Dolls was Brando’s first and last musical role, and while Gene Kelly might have been a natural fit here, Brando was the era’s box-office sizzler. The actor so well known for dramatic performances in A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) and On the Waterfront (1954) hated the sound of his singing voice (he compared it to “the mating call of a yak”) and spent hours working with voice coaches and recording multiple takes, which were then patched together for the movie. Meanwhile, Sinatra—known for his singing roles—sat around disgusted. Let’s just say: Brando’s baby face and cool delivery more than make up for his crooning, which is prettttty smooth—not unlike our coconut milk punch.
